Retirement Planning
Retirement Planning
One day, work becomes optional. Retirement planning is how you get ready for that day on purpose, instead of hoping it works out. Here's what that actually means.
Retirement planning means picturing the life you want later, putting a real number on it, and building the strategy to work toward it.
Here's the plain truth about retirement: your paycheck stops, but your bills don't. The money for those years has to come from somewhere: what you've saved, retirement accounts like a 401(k) or IRA, Social Security, maybe a pension. Retirement planning is the work of figuring out what your life will cost later, what those sources will actually provide, and whether there's a gap between the two.
That's what we do together. We take inventory of everything you have, look honestly at where it's pointed, and build a saving and investing strategy around when you want to stop working and how you want to live. Then, and this is the part most people skip, we keep updating it as your life changes. A retirement plan isn't a document. It's a conversation that runs for years.
The words, translated.
Retirement comes with its own vocabulary. You don't need most of it. These six cover nearly everything.
401(k)
A retirement account you get through your job. Money goes in straight from your paycheck, and many employers add matching contributions on top of yours.
IRA
An Individual Retirement Account. Like a 401(k), but you open it yourself, so it isn't tied to any job. If you're self-employed, this is often where you start.
Roth vs. Traditional
Two tax flavors of the same idea. Traditional: you get the tax break now and pay taxes later. Roth: you pay taxes now and qualified withdrawals come out tax-free later. Which fits you depends on your situation.
Social Security
The monthly benefit you've been paying into your whole working life. The age you start claiming it changes the size of the check, which makes the timing a real decision.
Pension
An employer-funded paycheck for life after you retire. Rarer than it used to be, but if you have one, it's a big piece of your picture.
Retirement income
The step people forget: turning what you've saved back into a monthly paycheck. How much to draw, from which accounts, in what order. Getting this right is half the job.

Retirement isn't an age. It's a number.
The question isn't "when can I retire?" It's "what will my life cost, and what will I have?" A teacher with a pension, a nurse with a 403(b), and a business owner selling their company all get there differently. So we don't plan around averages. We plan around you.
Whether you're twenty years out or five, we map your accounts, your Social Security timing, and what your months will actually cost. You leave with a picture you can understand and a plan you can act on, and we revisit it together as life moves.

Where you stand
We gather the whole picture: accounts, savings rate, Social Security estimates, pensions, debts. An honest snapshot of today, with no judgment about how you got here.
What later looks like
We put a real number on the retirement you actually want: where you'll live, what your months will cost, what you want to be free to do. Then we measure the gap between that and today.
The plan that adapts
A saving and investing strategy built to close the gap, reviewed with you over the years. Careers shift, markets move, plans change. Yours keeps up.
No one can promise what markets will do, and no strategy assures success or protects against loss. What a plan gives you is something most people never have: a clear picture of where you stand, an honest answer to "am I on track," and a path that updates when life does.
The questions we hear every single week.
If one of these is the reason you haven't called anyone yet, you're in good company.
Ask us anythingAm I too late to start?
The honest answer: the best time to start was years ago, and the second best time is this week. If you're in your 40s or 50s, there are catch-up options built into the rules specifically for you. What we won't do is pretend everything's fine or that it's hopeless. We'll show you exactly where you stand and what's realistic from here.
How much do I actually need to retire?
There's no universal number, no matter what the headlines say. It depends on what your life costs, where you'll live, and what you want your days to look like. That's the whole point of planning: we put your number on it, not an average.
When should I take Social Security?
It's one of the biggest decisions in retirement, because the age you claim changes your check for life. Earlier means smaller checks for longer, later means bigger checks for fewer years. The right answer depends on your health, your other income, and your spouse. We walk through the scenarios with you before you file anything.
What happens to my 401(k) when I change jobs?
You have options: leave it where it is, move it to your new employer's plan, or roll it into an IRA. Each has trade-offs, and the wrong move can cost you in taxes. Bring it to us before you touch it and we'll talk through what fits.
I own a business. What are my options?
Good ones, actually. There are retirement accounts built specifically for business owners and the self-employed, some with room to save far more than a standard 401(k) allows. We'll help you sort out which fits your business.
Will you tell me if I'm NOT on track?
Yes. That's the job. A comfortable lie now becomes a painful surprise at 68. If there's a gap, we'll show it to you clearly and build the plan to close it, while there's still time to act.
